Il potere del ritratto. Egitto e Roma. I volti del Fayum
Museo dell'Ara Pacis
The Ara Pacis Museum hosts a major exhibition dedicated to the painted portraits of Roman Egypt and the power of the image in ancient Rome. Over 110 works including painted panels, shrouds, funerary masks, marbles, plaster casts and ancient goldsmith pieces tell one of the most fascinating artistic expressions of antiquity. The Fayum portraits, wooden panels painted in tempera or with the encaustic technique, are among the most famous and rare images of the ancient world: just under a thousand are preserved worldwide and they are rarely lent. Almost 50 portraits will be exceptionally brought together in Rome thanks to an important international loan program. For the first time, Egypt grants almost all the panels preserved in its collections, never before left the country. The exhibition is completed by twenty-three works from the Louvre Museum, extraordinary loans from the Getty Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Landesmuseum Württemberg in Stuttgart and other major international institutions.
